How To REALLY Make Money Working Online…
Yes, it’s possible. You can make money online.
I’ve already talked in other posts ways for you to get started easily – your main options are:
- Create a part time or full time job for yourself and make money that way (selling on eBay, Amazon… selling your services…)
- Take the time to work out how to start your own online business – put the work in now so you can profit long term.
- Buy ready made websites from sites like Flippa (buyer beware! do your research since there’s a lot of junk there). Or get ready made sites by becoming a gold level member here if you like.
- You can also make money online by creating pages on Squidoo (they call web pages Lens’) or HubPages (they call them Hubs). Now you won’t earn much this way without putting a LOT of work in, but it’s a good place to get your feet wet in the internet publishing world.
Since I created this site to focus on helping you create passive income through your own websites, I may have a tendency to repeat myself…
I may have a tendency to repeat myself…
;-)
But if the idea of a few hundred, to a few thousand dollars a month with not much day to day work appeals, then creating your own Auto Pilot Income Sites may be for you.
Now again, it does take work at the start to get the skills and know how in place to build your own web business, but once it’s up and running and taking on a life of its own, it may amaze you.
But all this said, creating and building your own websites may not be for you. It may not interest you, and if that’s the case it really may not be the right thing for you. I really believe it’s better to do something you enjoy, than just chase something for the money.
If you have a business doing what you enjoy, you may find the money finds you a lot easier. Obviously! — I’m not talking about getting paid to watch television, but if you enjoy writing, maybe offering your services as an article writer is a good way to go.
You can start by offering your service at TextBroker or eLance or Guru… maybe sign up with Demand Media or Seed (part of AOL), and perhaps in time you’ll be able to grow a client list and build a thriving business.
One thing I should say – a lot of online writing has become commoditized – you can see that by the low prices paid. So if this really appeals to you long term, becoming an expert writer on niche subjects (finance, medical…) can mean you charge more for your services as not many people are able to compete with you at that level of expertise.
Legitimate work from home opportunities – do they actually exist?
Yes they do, but if you’re new to looking it can be a minefield trying to figure out what’s real, and what’s junk.
When my interest in making money online started all those many, many years ago, I was taken in by a bunch of crap, and wasted a LOT of money in the process. Live and learn I guess, but that’s definitely the hard way of going about things…
To be completely honest — one reason I write this blog is so you realize there’s a real person behind this site, with real opinions, who updates this site often… rather than just another flashy ‘sales website’ with lots of glitz, but you’re always left wondering if it’s going to be yet another disappointing online purchase.
Okay, so how can you spot legitimate work from home opportunities?
- Crazy claims is usually a pretty good warning sign. The most realistic way to make six figures in the next 30 days is to start off with seven figures. :-) But buying a $97 product and making six figures immediately — things don’t work like that.
- All those products offering big money for ‘data entry’? If you’re not familiar with what these actually are, they’re unfortunately very misleading:
The ‘data entry’ they’re talking about is placing advertisements online, sending visitors to a merchant’s website (like Amazon) and then you get a percentage of the sales you refer.
Technically, this is called traffic arbitrage — you’re looking to pay less for your advertising, than you make in affiliate commissions.
Some people make six figures a month doing this, it’s true. But it’s harder than ever, and those who are really successfully generally have a huge advertising budget (think seven figure spend a month with a 30% return on investment) and they have staff and extraordinary expertise in online advertising.
You’re not going to get all that in a $97 product, and I really find it sad that people can sell such poor, downright misleading products and keep a clear conscience. - ‘Make big money filling in surveys or being a secret shopper’? — Do any search for these online and they’re invariably poor quality products with rehashed information.
If there was such a glut of survey opportunities online, wouldn’t everyone be doing them? - Forex Robots — don’t even get me started! When professional traders at investment banks lose money on the forex (Foreign Exchange) market, what chance does a little bit of software running on your PC have?
This is another group of websites that make me mad about the sheer poor quality of products they seem happy to sell, misleading people in the process.
Really strong copy, flashy website, unrealistic claims, making it sound really quick and easy…
These persuasion tactics still work to this day, but after reading this article, they should be a big red warning sign to you!
I go out of my way to put realistic expectations across in my sales copy. Of course I have to be a little bit salesy, but I’ve had thousands of happy customers over the years as I really work as hard as I can to over deliver to customers.
I guess what this all boils down to is:
If it sounds too good to be true…
I think you know the rest! And do some research before clicking the buy button so you understand what you’re purchasing and whether it’s the right fit for you before you do. Reading this blog every day is a great start! :-)
The easiest way to make money online? What do you think it is…
Let me be frank…
(Now before I go any further, I must be clear that this is all my own opinion, I’m sure many people reading will disagree with me, however I’ll do my best in this post to back up all my opinions with facts and/or anecdotes)
There is some easy money online but a lot of it is pretty scammy, and particularly short lived.
A couple of examples:
- 12 Daily Pro — even though many people who invested in this (and mostly lost money) disagree, this was a ponzi scheme.
What’s a ponzi scheme? It’s an “investment scheme” with particularly high and consistent returns, but these are fraudulent since returns for past investors are paid out from money invested by new investors. It’s the ultimate pyramid scheme, it’s illegal (as it should be), and the later in the scheme you invest, the more likely you are to lose your money.
Bernard Madoff ran the worlds biggest ponzi scheme for example, and is now in jail for it.
Now, some investors do make money with things like this if they get out quick (and the owners definitely do until they get shut down by the FTC) but it’s really scammy, seedy, and short lived.
- The Acai Berry craze — Have you heard about the Acai Berry?
Apparently it has amazing fat burning properties, and became quite fashionable and much talked about a few years ago, so inevitably scammers jumped all over it. Here’s what they did…
They sourced Acai Berry pills of dubious quality and effectiveness, and sold them as a FREE TRIAL (just pay shipping…) And in tiny type you could barely see on the page (if they even included it), it said that after a week you would be billed $78 a month for more pills until you cancel. And often, you were enrolled into a completely separate billing of $78 a month for a colon cleansing program or whatever other product they were selling.
Now, since the monthly charges were hidden, and all that was really shown on the page was FREE TRIAL, people were surprised when one or two monthly charges of $78 began appearing on their cards.
And even more surprised when the monthly orders didn’t turn up, and when nobody answered the customer service line…
It got pretty out of hand, until again the FTC came in.
And on top of all this, while the Acai Berry craze was on, sellers of these pills were offering affiliates up to $50 for every ‘free trial’ they sold.
So affiliates started lying through their teeth to make sales (and they made a ton of cash) — making fake news sites with ‘endorsed by Oprah Winfrey‘ on them, amongst other lies. And Oprah found out, starting suing these affiliates, and they didn’t have quite so much cash after that…
I guess the point I’m getting at is that usually easy and fast money is scammy and short lived money. I’d be interested to hear examples where that isn’t the case.
Everything I talk about on this site, and everything I promote on this site is focused on creating a real part time or full time business that adds value to the world and that makes you income for years, even decades to come.
Now, if you want fast and easy cash that may not appeal to you, so maybe this website isn’t for you. But if building a real and lasting business that makes you money consistently appeals to you feel free to read more posts on this site, become a free member, and even upgrade to Gold level membership.
What is the best way to earn money online… for you?
There’s lots of ways to earn money online, from a few dollars, to a few thousand dollars…
You could sell bits and pieces on eBay or on Amazon. Won’t earn you much unless you put a lot of work in, but it’s an easy way to make some extra cash. Personally I recommend Amazon over eBay these days as it’s much easier to sell on.
You could offer your services – for example transcription, article writing, audio recording, web design… or even pretty much anything you can think of (for crazy ideas visit fiverr.com – it’s amazing what people will do for $5!).
Now the purpose of this site is to help you make a part time, or full time income, with your own websites, with surprisingly little ongoing work.
I’ve mentioned before why I consider this such a strong way to earn income online:
- I truly believe that now is the ideal time to start (or grow) your online business. Right now the opportunities are wide open. it won’t always be this way.
- Websites work for you, even when you’re sleeping, or at your day job!
- By building websites, you’re creating something valuable that you can sell down the road if you choose. I recently sold some of my websites for a very nice five figure sum.
Now, you may be new to internet publishing/marketing, and may not be familiar with how to create or edit a website, how to get visitors to your website, or understand much of the jargon…
I would say the main points that stop people really attacking having their own online business are:
- Don’t know how to start
- Don’t have the skills
- Think there’s too much competition
- Don’t have the time/energy to put the work in
- Not particularly comfortable with computers
Once they’re up and running, your websites can make money for you with little ongoing work, but you do need to put the work in at the start, and you will have a learning curve if you’re new to all this.
One reason I offer Gold membership to this site is to start helping solve these problems. And the best way to get good at anything is to just do it.
But all this said, maybe this isn’t for you right now. However, if it does appeal I strongly suggest doing any work online to start getting experience and for making some extra cash to re-invest into your business if you choose — perhaps it’s writing articles for others through a site like TextBroker, or eLance or Guru.com, or if you’re a fast typist finding a transcription service online that out sources typing work, so they can send you work that way.
Whatever service you offer, this can earn you extra cash, and then if you’re looking for a business that can scale more (make more money with less work required from you over time) and passive income does sound good to you, then use some of the proceeds from this extra income to reinvest into your internet business, and spend if you can at least an hour a day getting to grips with it.
Of course I am biased (as I own this site!) by I strongly recommend becoming a Gold level member as a starting point as you get ready made sites you can have up and running on the internet in a couple of hours, and these are proven sites.
And from my own history — I worked all day as a software engineer and studied internet marketing and worked on my own websites in the evening. It didn’t happen overnight, but at a certain point I went full time and I’ve never looked back!
Now, I’m not going to pretend it’s always been smooth sailing running my own business, but I find it way more fun than working for someone else and it gives you much more flexibility in your life.
Is Network Marketing the best business model for creating residual income?
My answer is No.
Now, I’m sure a lot of people disagree with me, but I’ll explain my reasons in just a moment.
Let me firstly say, that when my interest started in ‘business opportunities’ all those years ago, network marketing (also know as multi level marketing) really appealed. Hey, what could be better than being paid for the work other people do!
Well, the reality isn’t quite that simple. I was really into ‘business opportunities’, and I bought tons of stuff and studied loads, tried lots of different things, but the more I did this, but more my ideas started to mature.
Over time, I became less and less interested in ‘opportunities’, and much more interested in ‘business’.
And it became clear to me, the real money is in running a business. And by owning a profitable business, you create your own residual income – and – you own an asset that can be sold for a large amount. This is the best of both worlds.
However, being able to start, run, and build a successful business is not something you’re born with. Some people take to it much easier than others – perhaps they come from an entrepreneurial family and that’s really rubbed off, or some people are just entrepreneurial by nature.
It took me a loooong time to really start understanding internet marketing, money management, website publishing, advertising, sales… and everything else you need to know to run a successful business. It took tons of studying and trial and error in the evenings (after my day job), and then really kicked in once I’d gone full time in my business and was living off savings, so I had to make it work.
The point I’m getting at is if you want big money – as residual income, and with the option of a huge pay day when you sell your business, then being in business for yourself is the way to go.
That said, many people earn a great extra income with very little day to day work with a part time business in the evenings – some a few dollars a month, some a few hundred dollars a month, and some a few thousand dollars a month.
All the sacrifices it takes to really build a business is not for everyone since it’s risky and takes over your life. But once you’ve built your business and pushed the boulder to the top of the hill, your business continues to grow and make money for you with much less effort (the boulder starts rolling down the other side…)
But again, I would say maybe most people are happy with a few hundred (or more) dollars extra a month with a business they can fit in around their schedule. And I specifically offer Gold Membership to the site to help you achieve this goal, and in a way that short cuts by years the development of a profitable business.
Okay, I’ve moved slightly off topic — why am I so against network marketing?
Here’s why:
- You don’t have flexibility of what you sell. You need to sell/promote the products of the company, and these are often way overpriced. Saying that, I was a customer of USANA for a long time since I found their product good but it really is way overpriced and I’ve since stopped taking it. There’s no way you could get away with charging those prices at retail.
- It’s a flimsy business model – the bulk of your money is made on finding others who want to be in business, and their goal is to find others… you end up with thousands of people not doing anything, at best they continue to buy the products.
- If the company goes under, you get no more income. Would you really invest thousands of dollars and years of your life, into an income stream that could disappear overnight? I knew a very motivated network marketer who was making around $400,000 a year from a company he’d been promoting very hard for years. All the investment and hard work had paid off and this money kept coming in… until the company went bankrupt and his income dropped to zero.
Look, this is all my opinion, but I started out in network marketing, but realized that it’s selling a dream that isn’t even close to reality. The story you hear of the first Amway guy to start recruiting in China (may have the facts wrong here, but you get the idea) may be true, but how many people like that are there in the world – a few dozen? And again, you’re selling overpriced products that people don’t really want, and staking your entire livelihood on a company that could go out of business overnight.
Again – for the real long term income plus a huge pay day in the future, I strongly recommend building your own profitable business that you can sell one day. This isn’t for everyone, but if you feel it’s for you and you’re confident you’ll reach your business goals, the upside is huge for you.
But once more – you don’t need to take things to that level to make $500 or $5,000 extra a month part time. Having your own business you run evenings and weekends can be an easy way to make extra cash, and if you’re building websites and marketing them, you’re creating assets you can sell down the road.
For example – I sold several sites to a business partner of mine recently. They weren’t making much money at all since I’d neglected them (I have trouble multi-tasking), but they were getting around 300 visitors a day total (across all the sites) consistently, at no cost. So my business partner purchased the sites from me for a very nice five figure sum, so he could present offers to those visitors.
I’d done the work on those sites years ago, neglected them, but because I had built up valuable assets, I could sell them for a good amount.
3 MORE Ways To Make Money Online With Your Own Website
Method 1: Build an email list
If you’re serious about making the most income you can from your website, building an email list is vital.
Now — by doing this, you’re immediately making more work for yourself, because even though you’ll set things up so every email subscriber can automatically unsubscribe if they choose by clicking the unsubscribe link, some will still reply to you asking (not always politely) to unsubscribe them. So by doing this, you’re creating some support work for yourself.
So if you want a totally hands off business, this may not be for you, but if you’re happy to put up with this inconvenience, the upside can be huge.
Here’s how it works:
- A visitor comes to your website.
- You offer them something valuable (eBook, private membership…etc.) in return for their name and email address
- You follow up on them, once or twice a week (or even more if you like, probably best not to overdo it though) with useful content mixed in with promotions. You can just send out promotions if you like, but it’s unlikely your list will stay subscribed if you do.
- Every time you send out an email in this way, a percentage (I’ve often seen 5%) click through to visit the offer you’re promoting. So 1,000 subscribers means 50 visitors to an offer. But over a year (52 weeks x 2 emails a week) that’s 5,200 repeat visits that you wouldn’t have seen if you weren’t building an email list.
And it’s important you stay within the rules of CAN-SPAM when dealing with email lists.
I suggest using a third party service for managing your list. There’s iContact, Constant Contact, MailChimp and many others.
Method 2: Get paid for reviews
You have to mention that what you’re writing is a paid review, but if you do that you can get paid for writing reviews!
Some website owners get paid $30 per review, some $5,000 — it all depends on how much traffic you get.
Now if you’re doing this it’s important you don’t over do it, I would say every few posts at most, and importantly give an honest review.
If this interests you, check out ReviewMe and Pay Per Post for starters.
Method 3: Sell physical products
How does Amazon make most of their money? Easy – selling physical products like books, DVDs, TVs…
Now, chances are you probably don’t want to have your own warehouse! But with drop shipping, you can advertise as many products as you like, collect money for orders, and then send the maker of the product xx% (perhaps 50%) of the order, and they ship it straight to the customer.
With a bit of research you can find merchants that drop ship products in this way. Some even will give you a branded white label store front instead, which actually makes things way easier for you — what this means is it looks just like someone’s shopping on your site, but in reality they’re placing the order with the merchant, with you getting a percentage.
Or of course, you can promote as many physical products as you’d like as an affiliate, which frankly is the easiest way to promote (and make money from) physical products.
That said, many, many people make very good money getting products cheap in bulk, and reselling them through their own site or on eBay. But that creates a lot of storage and order fulfillment issues that may not necessarily appeal to you.
3 Ways To Make Money Online With Your Own Website
Is it actually possible to make money online?
YES!
So how do you go about doing just that? Well…
There’s many, many ways to do just that, and I’ll be talking through them in later posts. But for now let’s focus on three very achievable ways:
- Making money through advertising
- Affiliate marketing
- Selling an information product
Making Money Through Advertising
This is exactly what it says — you advertise on your site and you get paid for either:
- Showing the advertisement
- Whenever someone clicks on the advertisement
When you get paid just for showing an advertisement, you’re either paid on a set basis, for example $200 for the entire month.
Or you’re paid on a CPM basis, which stands for Cost Per Mille (Thousand). In other words, if your CPM is $3, for every 1,000 times a banner is shown on your site, you get $3.
But of course, you can have more than one banner per page… if you have 5 ad blocks per page each at $3 CPM, that’s $15 for every thousand views!
Or when you’re paid per click, different adverts pay less or more than others. For example, if someone is advertising mortgages on your site, they’ll be willing to pay a lot more per click (visitor), than someone advertising discount phones. Simply because one is worth a lot more than the other.
Unless you want to recruit advertisers manually (time consuming and not a good choice if you’re a small website for now), you can sign up to an advertising network like AdSense, adBrite, BlogAds, and there’s many more. They find the advertisers for you, and automatically put adverts on your site and pay you for them.
Making Money Through Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is where you get paid everytime a visitor you send to an offer, takes up that offer.
There’s CPA and CPS affiliate marketing:
- CPA stands for Cost Per Action. For example – you send visitors to a free survey, and the owner of that survey pays $1 to you every time the survey is completed. CPA is easy to make money with, but because of the potential for fraud, it can often be difficult to get approved to networks that present such affiliate offers.
- CPS stands for Cost Per Sale (also known as PPS – Pay Per Sale). There’s much less risk for fraud with this model, it’s easier to get approved to CPS networks like ClickBank, Share A Sale and Commission Junction, or even private CPS affiliate programs like the Amazon one.
With CPS/PPS you only get paid every time a visitor you refer takes up a paid offer. For example, you refer visitors to Amazon, one of them purchases an LCD TV, and you get 5% of that sale as commission — let’s say $60.
So you can choose whether you’re going to focus on CPA or CPS offers, or both, and then send traffic to those offers from your website.
Selling An Information Product
An information product is where you sell information, like private membership access, an eBook, or even a set of coaching DVDs.
Information product prices can range from $1 to thousands, depending on how valuable the information is. For example, in depth market research reports sold business to business can sell for thousands, for even less than 100 pages, since the information can be so difficult (and expensive) to get, and is so valuable to the company buying it.
So you can pay a writer to create an information product for you, or create it yourself.
You then need to do some salesmanship – either with a sales page or a sales video, or both. Or in some cases, even get potential customers to phone you and you sell them over the phone… or send them an information pack through the post that sells them… lots of ways this can be approached.
You can also purchase rights to sell other people’s ready made information products — people often sell rights to eBooks or other training courses for example.
Now, I’ve broken up these different ways of making money, but really, you want to be using as many of them on your website as makes sense, (but without over-doing it to the point where people don’t want to visit your website) since the more ways you monetize your website, the more money you’ll make.
